PRESIDENT’S COMMENTS:   I will take this opportunity to wish all mothers a Happy Mother’s Day and thank/honor all Veterans (past and present) and their families for their service to our country. MAY is a particular month, it has some important dates to name a few such as; May 8th Time to Remember Lost Lives from  WW II,  May 10th Military Spouse Appreciation Day,  May 12th  Mother’s Day,  May 18th Armed Forces Day, May 24th Army Air Service Established, and most importantly May 24th Memorial Day.  Ladies and Gentlemen of Chapter 16 The Only Active Chapter in Kansas, we as a group are doing great because we are winners and don’t accept anything less. For those of you who have internet, you need to check out our chapter website. There is useful information on it; for example, Armed Forces E-9 Association Kansas, Chapter 1 April Newsletters and May Meeting Minutes. Last Month we had Rebecca Sharpton (Army Veteran), KS Veterans Services Representative at our meeting who brought us up to date on a lot of VA new information and changes.  Before our upcoming membership meeting, please think about the 2019 Picnic/social event for us all, time, place, and eats.  See you all at our meeting, same time and place.

Your President, Richard (Dick) Trow.

CHAPTER MEMBERSHIP TOTAL: 57 Number of members requiring membership renewal for 2019: 19

GUEST SPEAKER:  None      REST HOME:  William Long

BIRTHDAY IN MAY:  Duane Snyder, Fredrick Ramirez, and William Vinyard.

VOLUNTARY DRUG RECALL ALERT: On April 19, 2019, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a voluntary recall of a small number of carts labeled FENTANYL 12 mcg/h Transdermal System patches. Fentanyl is used to manage pain for patients who can tolerate opioids. The recalled cartons contained 50 mcg/h patches instead of 12 mcg/h patches. Using a 50 mcg/h patch instead of a prescribed 12 mcg/h patch could result in serious, life-threatening, or fatal respiratory depression. Groups at potential increased risk could include first time recipients of such stripes, children, and the elderly. To date, Alvogen, Inc. hasn’t received any reports of adverse events related to this issue. For information on this issue; visit TRICARE website / or call Tricare/West 1-844-866-9378 or Express-scripts 1-877-895-1900 (If you receive medicine by mail).

TRICARE HEALTH COVERAGE AFTER RETIREMENT:When you retire from active duty or turn age 60 as a retired reserve member, your TRICARE coverage changes. After either of these Qualifying Life Events (QLEs), you must TAKE ACTION and enroll in a TRICARE retiree health plan so that you and your family members don't have a gap in your TRICARE coverage after retirement. Typically, you have up to 90 days after your retirement date to enroll in a TRICARE plan as a retiree. IF YOU DON’T, you and your family members will only be able to get care at a military hospital or clinic if space is available.

LAST GRADUATION: On May 10th, St John’s Military School will have its Last/Final JROTC graduation event ever; unfortunately, it happens during our chapter meeting.

APRIL MEETING TIDBITS: Meeting attendance drawing winner was Ronald Sondegard won $20.00 gift card. All new and old business put on hold until our May meeting; this happened so that our guest speaker would have ample time to cover pertinent VA information. Speaker Rebecca Sharpton spoke to the members for approximately 50 minutes. Her detailed presentation was well received and appreciated. The chapter awarded her a two-years free TREA Chapter 16 membership and a TREA patch.

MEMORIAL DAY:  May 27th, 11:00 AM the VFW will host the event at Sunset Park War Memorial with a free lunch afterwards.

A QUOTE FOR MOTHER’S DAY: “There is no velvet as soft as a mother’s lap; no rose as lovely as her smile, no path so flowery as that imprinted with her footsteps.” —Archibald Thompson
