SECRETARY'S COMMENT: I want to take this opportunity to remindeveryone that chapter 16 has a free TREA membership rule. Per our Bylaws, Article III, Section 1b, annually, any member of chapter 16 in good standing may recognize and request to award a veteran or spouse of a veteran a one or two-year free TREA membership. The individual receiving the free membership must meet the TREA membership requirement in Article III, Section 1a. Chapter 16 will pay for the free membership. A military veteran is a person who is no longer serving in themilitary.
TAPS: Cecil Grimsley passed away on April 19, 2022 (Veteran USAF) and joined chapter 16 in 2018. He was a retired law enforcement officer and worked for the Salina Police Department and Saline County Sheriff'sDepartment. Please keep the Grimsley family in your thoughts and prayers.

MEMORIAL DAY EVENTS IN SALINA MAY 30TH: VFW at 10:00 AM, Gypsum Hill Cemetery; American Legion, Roselawn Cemetery; Ceremony (VFW, DAV, American Legion, Marines, VVA) at 11:00 AM, Salina-Saline County War Memorial, Sunset Park.
MEMBERSHIP: Total as of May 6: 47 members. On March 26, at the VVA chapter 809 Toxic Exposure Town Hall event, our chapter had a recruiting booth with a one-year complimentary membership drawing. At our April meeting, we selected the winner. The drawing winner was Diane Nicholson, Topeka, a spouse of an Army Veteran.
KANSAS BILL 2239: House Bill 2239 recently passed, which is supposed to cut property taxes, provide tax relief for KS veterans and the elderly, and offer tax credits to teachers who purchase school supplies out of their own pockets.
TIDBITS OF APRIL MEETING: The attendance drawing $20 gift card winner was William Quinley. Guest Speaker Mary Landes, Executive Director of The Temple- Salina Innovation Foundation, talked about the history of the 100-year-old Masonic Temple and offered a tour of the Temple. Chaplain M. Stewart presented her with a chapter Certificate of Appreciation. Treasurer Roger Thull gave the monthly financial report after three expenses totaling $172.20 and a remaining checking account balance of $1735.19.
MEMORIAL DAY: A time to remember those who died for our Freedoms! We don’t know them all, but we owe them all.
